Kotobukiya Dead or Alive 4: Ayane Ani-Statue Review

Oh look, another Dead or Alive girl review that I'm writing. Sigh. Okay, this is the second-to-last one, I promise. Unless they release new stuff since Dead or Alive 5 just came out.

Anyway, once again we have Ayane, the other main poster girl for the Dead or Alive fighting game series, and a minor character in the Ninja Gaiden series. Here she's wearing her second-most familiar outfit (the first being the purple ninja garb she has on the covers of the game): the blue leggins, ankle boots, sleeves, and one-piece with that massive orange ribbon. I never understood this costume. All someone has to do is grab that ribbon and pull at the right moment and I'm betting it would screw up Ayane's movement. Also, since her fighting style is based on spins and twists, I never understood how she doesn't get tangled up in it. Then again, this is a game where girls fight each other in the snow while wearing bikinis, so I'm clearly thinking about this too much.

This is one of the Kotobukiya statues, a company in Japan that makes statues of famous anime, video game, and comic girls--and some boys. As such, the detail is simply stunning. The ribbon really does look like it's floating around her while she falls backward. The look on her face is that same serious, lack-of-emotion, get-the-job done look she likes to wear when fighting. She can be rather cold-hearted at times, and this statue captures that feeling.
Her skirt has a little butterfly on the left side, staying in tune with Ayane's butterfly theme. Her outfit, while plain, is highly detailed. It has the fold marks in the fabric where they would logically be, making it look like she is literally frozen in time for a moment. Her hair is the right shade of purple as well, just covering enough of her eyes to keep with her look. I read in another review that her skirt comes off, but I sure couldn't figure that out. It does seem like the skirt is a separate piece, as I can move it slightly, but there's no way to get it off that I saw. There are also no instructions on how to do this, so I don't think you can. Besides, if you did, then all she'd have on are her white panties, and that would just look silly. Yes, they're white, for those of you wondering.

There are two things that aren't in the picture. First, she comes with a purple base that she's already mounted on. It says "Ayane" Arranged by CH@R. CH@R is the person who designed this statue. Another thing is that it comes with a clear plastic support that, if you want to, you can assemble and slide under the bow on Ayane's back. This is purely optional and the only reason to do this would be if your concerned about Ayane somehow falling backward. It fits nice and snug right under the bow.

Educational--this thing will teach you patience. Ayane comes in a sealed box, and Kotobukiya does NOT want to risk harm to any of their statues. She and her ribbon are wrapped in individual pieces of plastic. One for each side of the ribbon, one for each leg, one for each arm, one for her chest, one under her skirt (really? The panties were in danger?) Most of them are easy enough to get off once you get her out of the box, but the one that wraps around her legs under her skirt was a chore. Had to cut it and then pull rather hard. Just be patient taking all the stuff off and you'll get all the plastic off. Other than that, no educational value. Come on. It's a Dead or Alive girl. If you've read my other reviews, you already know my thoughts.

Durable. She seems pretty solid, although a little on the 'light' side when it comes to weight. As I said, when I was pulling the plastic off, I had to pull pretty hard on that last piece. While nothing broke, I was a little worried of snapping something because of the feel of this material. Again, just be patient when get her out of the plastic.

So, there's another review for another Ayane statue. Last one to get is the one where Ayane is in her skirt and blue top while stretching her leg in the ocean. Then I'm done. I promise. Okay, probably not, but still. These are fun and nice things for Dead or Alive fans.
