Superman Forever #1 Mini Statue Review

The original Superman Forever statue is one of the better pieces DC Direct has put out. It was a very accurate rendition of Alex Ross' art and featured a dynamic and very iconic Superman pose. Because of that, the statue was very popular and eventually sold out. The good news is that DC Direct finally decided to reissue the statue. The bad news is that it's an inferior reissue.

For reasons I'm still struggling to understand, DC Direct doesn't believe in re-releasing statues as they were originally. Instead, they shrink them down and sell them as mini-statues. The original mold must still exist if they can manufacture this, so why not just commission a new batch of full-size statues?

If this sounds like pointless complaining, know that this mini-statue is highly inferior to the original. Amazon's description says this is a 1:2 scale piece. I assume that's relative to the original, which was about 1:6 scale (12-inches tall). This mini-statue isn't even as tall as DC Direct's standard action figures. Unsurprisingly, the level of detail has fallen drastically in comparison to the original statue. The paint work, while not necessarily sloppy, is dull and doesn't really bring out the details of the statue in the way the original did. About the only benefit this mini-statue has over the original is that it's sculpted as one piece and doesn't need to be assembled.

The sculpt and design of this statue are sound at any scale. Unfortunately, DC Direct did no justice to the piece by shrinking it down. I highly recommend hunting down the original Superman Forever statue. And if you can't find it for a reasonable price (which is admittedly challenging at this point), maybe this version will be worth settling for. But that's what you'll be doing - settling for something less.
