BBi Elite Force 1/18 EF F18 C F-18 Hornet VFA-86 Sidewinders Review

This review concerns the F18C Hornet manufactured by the company Blue Box Toys. This particular model is in 1/18 scale. It is quite large and very well detailed. The box the model came in is very well done with graphics of the actual model inside. The model, as I indicated, is large. The features are as follows. The canopy can be positioned up or down. The wing tips fold as on the real aircraft. The landing undercarriage is fully operational and can be positioned up or down depending on your display preferences. The wheels do move. The launch bar can be positioned. The aircraft comes with an assortment of bombs and missiles that can be attached via the enclosed pylons. This is optional. A detailed pilot is included and he can be positioned inside the cockpit or static next to the aircraft. Three auxiliary fuel tanks are included and again this is optional. This particular model is of the VFA-86 Rattlers. A Navy squadron assigned to the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier. The model depicts the aircraft used by that squadron during "Operation Iraqi Freedom". This is noted by the graphic painted near the nose radar dome. The camouflage is also nicely done and captures the actual look of the aircraft deployed in that squadron. Even the aircrafts bureau number is authentically depicted. A nice touch. The graphics are crisp and clear and several additional graphics (stickers) are included for the safety placards in the wheel wells. One additional attached feature is a boarding ladder. Normally, the actual aircrafts boarding ladder is deployed from under the forward section of the wing. However, in this case, it is a ladder one attaches. Again, a nice touch. The landing gear can be moved/deployed as in the real aircraft. Again, go slow at first and know exactly how the gear is positioned before attempting to move it. Once you move it several times, it will be easier to deploy.

Overall, I really like this model for its level of detail. Its size and weight are nice. If you want, there are excellent pictures of this actual aircraft on line. Just look up VFA-86 F18 pictures and you should come across several. I surmise that these various photos served as the guide to making this model look as authentic as the actual aircraft. The F18C is an all weather capable fighter/ attack aircraft currently serving with various Navy & Marine Corps squadrons. The Hornet, as it is called, comes in two major variations. The Legacy Hornet. Which this model depicts and the Super Hornet. They are essentially two all together different aircraft. You will know by placing them side by side. The Super Hornet is the aircraft which essentially replaced the F14D Tomcat as well as several other Naval aircraft. This was done to streamline the fleets arsenal of aircraft and for greater operational efficiency. The Legacy Hornet is still active and serves the fleet. This model is very well done and very durable. However, it is not meant for riding on or throwing around. It is simply a large display model. Although somewhat expensive, I still highly recommend it if you can get your hands on this one. Out of production Hornet models now fetch astronomical prices. Some ranging near $700 or more US dollars. I paid roughly $225 for mine and that was including shipping & handling. Well worth the price as I am fully aware of these models being rarely made to this level of detail. One other note. If you hang this model for display. Make sure you use high strength fishing line. Tested for 30 plus pounds. This model does have some weight, but she looks real nice static or hanging. The cockpit is also very highly detailed and the pilot looks great in the seat. Which, by the way, is removable. Again, a nice touch. Except for my F14A Jolly Roger Tomcat, this F18C is super nice and very big. Make sure you allow allot of space when assembling it. This requires minimal effort, but remember go slow and be patient.
