I saw a great deal on this and bought it for my daughter as a Christmas present. Since it's months till Christmas and I was really eager to see how the quality was on this I opened up the box to check it out. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the 6V rechargeable battery pack is NI-MH. Since it wasn't specified anywhere I assumed it was a cheap ni-cad. It also came with a generic 9V battery for the remote.
The quality of the remote was a bit disappointing, for something that retails for a couple hundred bucks I would have expected a sturdier feeling remote. It was on par with the quality of the remotes I have for those little Chinese helicopters you can find for $20. The silver trim on the top of the remote isn't very well attached and could pull up from the bottom edge of the remote with little effort.
One cool thing is that the car works out of the box. All the erector set metal parts are not essential to it's operation -although it's probably going to break a lot easier if you crash it without the metal body on. I plugged in the batteries, made sure the kids weren't in earshot and gave it a little run around the driveway. It seemed pretty quick, of course all that metal will slow it down a bit, but it should help with traction as it spins the tires a bit on concrete. The remote worked well to about 125 feet.
The front wheels have independent suspension and the rear wheels are sprung together across the axle. The tires are all squishy hollow rubber.
I'll have to come back in January and add a review after we assemble the metal parts.
If you can get it for significantly less than suggested retail, it's a decent little RC car plus added the fun of assembling the body kit.
