Metal Gear Solid Risk Limited Edition Individually Numbered Board Game Review

May contain spoilers of either MGS4, or Risk: Metal Gear Solid. Just warning ya!

I bought this game when it was released last year (2011) as part of a pre-order bonus of the limited edition 2014 copies of the Metal Gear Solid Risk game. I don't know what the difference between the limited edition and the collector's edition is, except that the box-art has art by Metal Gear Solid series art director, Yoji Shinkawa. Let's get down to the basics:

Metal Gear Solid Risk is a fully-incorporated Risk battle game complete with the map of the earth, and has 5 powers vying for ownership of the land as seen and played against in the Metal Gear Solid 4 video game for PlayStation 3. Series characters Solid Snake (Old Snake in this version), Liquid Ocelot (Solid Snake's twin brother), Rat Patrol Team 01 (Meryl Silverhburgh), Raiden (Cyborg Ninja from MGS4), Vamp (Undying vampire-soldier), Beauty and the Beast Corps (Bosses from the Metal Gear 4 game), Colonel Roy Campbell (Solid Snake's commanding officer in all 4 games), and Big Mama Aka "Eva" (Solid Snake's Surrogate Mother, and lover to Big Boss in MGS3) all make their "guest" appearances as official Boss Characters for this version of Risk: Metal Gear Solid. Each boss has a feature they take with them into the campaign, ie Solid Snake has the ability to add +1 to both your highest attacking die when attacking or defending. Liquid Ocelot adds +1 to all attacking die. Raiden adds +2 to highest attacking die, but -1 to highest rolling die when defending. Some characters let you re-roll 1's, some guarentee you a certain number of drebin points, or drebin cards... It's quite complicated, but you can switch Bosses in and out with Drebin Points, a currency that plays a major factor in both MGS4 and Risk: Metal Gear Solid. Bosses cost a total of 3000 Drebin Points to buy, and some rewards tokens (used as staging points for capturing enemy territory) allow you to control up to two bosses. The game gets deeper, in a sense, that you are not only fighting for countries and lands, but that you are trying to secure cities, which add to your total recruitment number at the start of your turn, drebin points, which allow you to buy bosses, play drebin shop cards, or even lure the enemy to your side as part of an alliance when playing against multiple people. The drebin points are your life guage, in a sense.

The game plays like it would a normal Risk game, adding to it all the extras I've mentioned. Drebin shop cards, which can be bought for 3000 each, add substantial abilities, including series-recognizing abilities such as Foxdie (which removes a Boss permanently from gameplay), Metal Gear Rex which is activated with a Pal key card that can destroy enemy units before they have a chance to roll, and Metal Gear Ray, which is the only card capable of destroying Metal Gear Rex. Everything plays out like a Metal Gear game, minus all the action, hiding, and cutscenes. To win the game simply control a number of Reward Tokens (the basic quest system in this game), destroy a faction, or all factions from this game, or forfeit. The game's big changing event plays out with the addition of a moving land-piece called "Outer Haven", a submergable ship that can attack 1 of 6 predetermined staging points, which adds a +1 to all attacking die but leaves you vulnerable for invasion from an enemy army, and the only device which can transport troops from seazone to seazone besides manuevering at the end of your turn. The battleship is nice, minus the fact that you have to conquer it from a "neutral" ground force in order to obtain it. The fact that the ship moves at the start of each round makes it harder to occupy unless you've taken the first stage of the ship's 3-stage maneuver card. Once you get the game going, it becomes a lot of fun!

As I said, I am 1127 of 2014 of this limited edition copy, and the collector's edition can still be found, probably at a cheaper price too. If you are a fan of either Metal Gear Solid 4, the MGS series in general, or an avid RISK fan who would love to learn some new skills with a few buddies of theirs -- this could be the game for you. My brother and sister and I play it constantly; that, and we know the Metal Gear series well.

Game pieces are beautifully decorated to reflect their origin. Enemy soldiers are accompanied by "Gekko", the series standard Metal Gear units that patrol territories with guards in Metal Gear Solid 4, which act as 3 armies, and HQ's are deployed before the game begins as a staging point for enemies to capture, as it adds +1 to all recruiting armies at the beginning of your turn. That's it!

Hope you enjoyed this little taste. Get the board-game if you can. It will truly be a collector's edition in the near future! 2014, that is. ;)
