This Japanese standard size Shin-Kaya Goban set comes with a standard clear finish for a nice clean appearance and feel. Looks like kaya, feels like kaya, but doesn't cost like kaya. Most shin-kaya (Japanese for ''alternative kaya'') boards from Japan or Korea are made of spruce wood from Alaska or Siberia. Our shin-kaya Go boards are made of Tibet spruce wood from Yunnan Province in southern China. This type of wood is called ''picea asperata'' in Latin and is sometimes called ''dragon spruce'' or ''Tibet Spruce''.

2-3/8'' Solid Shin-Kaya Spruce Go Game Table Board Review

I own a 7.1 sun Hyuga-Kaya Go table for playing and study Go at home. However, Hyuga-Kaya boards are not very easy to take care of, and I cannot carry the board around for sure (it weighs 26 Kg)! So, I decided to get a table top Go board. Spending a bit time, I found this board on amazon.com. I would like to share my experience with Go players who are looking for a table-top boards.

Usually, Shin-Kaya means boards made from North American spruce. However, this Shin-Kaya board is made by Tibetian spruce, and it is made by a single piece of Tibetian Spruce instead of gluing several pieces of wood together. The dimension of this board is the same as that of the traditional Japanese standard boards.

When put Go stones on the board, the feeling is a bit softer comparing with North American spruce boards. I like the board very much, and I recommend this product to whoever looking for a table-top Go board. Of course, the quality of this board is very good, but not as good as Hyuga-Kaya. But with the price only one tenth of that of Hyuga-Kaya boards, this Go board is a steal! Get one when it is still available.

The only suggestion is that the included Go board caring instruction about using protection oil is completely mis-leading! Please use only the best wax to protect this board, e.g., the Renassance Museum Wax or Natural Black Bison Wax made by Liberon, England.
